How you can really drive traffic and growth to your website through Pinterest

By Anas Kasak

One of the many questions we get asked at Seventy Nine PR and Marketing is how can Pinterest help our business?

We love Pinterest in our offices. This is because it gives businesses and brands the chance to really engage and target customers and also has the potential to drive traffic back to your website.

One question we have all asked is ‘How do I get more followers on Pinterest?’ Here are some tips that our social media team have put together to help you out.

1. Get creative with your boards!

On Pinterest – creativity is key! Boards are a great way to portray a brand’s personality, values, and also gain the attention of a company’s target audience.

One way to do this is to choose a board name that is both clever and clear so that users know what they are going to find on the board. Remember to keep the board names short but sweet and don’t forget those keywords! The description is also an important aspect to a Pinterest board because it gives you the opportunity to be informative about your business and products.

Businesses and brands should also select a category that accurately describes a board because Pinterest allows people to browse these categories and therefore potential followers will find you this way. Most importantly make sure boards are filled with a variety of content to keep people interested.

Eg: Whole Foods Market have come up with some interesting board names!

2.Make use of #hashtags

#Hashtags are an important way of gaining followers because they make content more reachable, in particular with people who are using the Pinterest search features.

Using a unique hashtag for a #brand will also aid a business to get more #followers because it raise awareness of both the brand and business. This also allows businesses to see what other people are saying and pinning from your page. Remember not to overdo it with the hashtags though. We recommend around 2 or 3.

E.g New Look uses a unique hash tag for its brand.

3. Add a Pinterest button to your website

This button directs visitors from a website to a business’s Pinterest page therefore increasing the chances of attracting and gaining followers.

E.g Tesco

4. Engage with other pinners

Just as you would on Facebook and Twitter, engage with other members on Pinterest. For example commenting on popular posts will enable you to reach a wider audience.

Mentioning people in pins will increase the amount of people your pin reaches and also build a reputation with professionals and other businesses. Repining other people’s content will also help increase your reach and to gain followers.

5. Share pins regularly

Try to add between 5-30 new pins a day. Although, like other social media platforms avoid spamming followers with lots of content.

6. Run contests

Competitions give companies the perfect opportunity to encourage people to pin original content. As a result this raises awareness of your brand to those who see your pins and as a result increases the chance of gaining more followers.

7. Connect to your social networks

We think this is one of the easiest ways to drive more traffic to all your social media platforms. Linking Pinterest to both Facebook and Twitter means that you will gain the attention of existing followers on these platforms, many of whom will decide to follow you on Pinterest as well.

E.g Just as we have done!

8. Use good quality images

It is important to use good quality images on your Pinterest page because not only does it look professional but it will attract more people to your Pinterest page.

9. Link to original content

One of the most common mistakes we’ve noticed is that Pinners tend to just pin items from other boards.

Variety is king to attract followers. Make sure your business also creates original content on Pinterest like an infographic.

Creating original content such as blogs is valuable because it is informative to your target audience and also drives traffic back to your businesses website and other social media platforms.
